What good, this pendulum swing?

Excellent Walter Williams blog post for today. In Constitutional Law class in law-school we discussed this very issue. Most Congressmen operate in a political realm where the U.S. Constitution doesn’t mean anything. But we know the U.S. Supreme Court is not shy in overturning laws it doesn’t like. I guess this means the Supreme Court operates in a legal realm where the U.S. Constitution doesn’t mean anything.

Williams says:

We shouldn't think that the cure to Congress' unconstitutional heavy-handedness
will end if we only elect Republicans. Republicans have demonstrated nearly as
much constitutional contempt as have Democrats. The major difference is the
significant escalation of that contempt under today's Democratically controlled
Congress and White House with the massive increase in spending, their proposed
legislation and the appointment of tyrannical czars to control our lives. It's a
safe bet that if and when Republicans take over the Congress and White House,
they will not give up the massive increase in control over our lives won by the
Democrats.

This touches on an issue that increasingly worries me as Obama and the in-power-Democrats marginalize themselves with increasingly radicalism. By shooting themselves in the foot, the Democrats may launch the Republicans back in power, but ultimately, what good will that do the American people? If, in fact, they do “not give up the massive increase in control over our lives won by the Democrats” then what good will a Democrat fall do us?

My fear is that what the Democrats are now doing will allow Republicans to return to power without the necessity of a painful reformation or internal-revolution. The Republican party will be able to be what it has recently proved itself to be without weeding out its problems.

Imagine the conquest of a nation: First you send in the blitzkrieg to take it over (Democrats), and then you send in the special forces who are good at keeping down a restless populous (Republicans). I hope this analogy is way off. As I said, this is my fear.
